Global Observations of Ozone Isotopic Ratios from Mipas Limb Emission Spectra
نویسندگان
چکیده
The observed variations in the isotope ratios often reveal information about the relative strengths of different sources and sinks of the trace gas in question, and about the transport processes which influence its distribution. With the magnitude of the heavy ozone isotope effect known, the isotopes can serve as markers for atmospheric transport and chemical reactions. The enrichment observed in stratospheric CO2 is just one of the possible transfers of an isotopic signature from ozone to another minor constituent. Ozone isotopes of molecular mass 49 and 50 are difficult to measure in the atmosphere since they are present in parts per billion range or below. Measurements of stratospheric ozone [1, 2] and of ozone generated in the laboratory using a variety of techniques consistently find that ozone is enriched relative to O2 in both O and O. The measurements also suggest that a mass-independent process is involved. In this study we present the feasibility of retrieving the different isotopes of ozone and their global distributions and enrichments observed by MIPAS.

Retrieval of stratospheric ozone profiles from MIPAS/ENVISAT limb emission spectra: a sensitivity study
We report on the dependence of ozone volume mixing ratio profiles, retrieved from limb emission infrared spectra of the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS), on different retrieval setups such as the treatment of the background continuum, cloud filtering, spectral regions used for analysis and a series of further more technical parameter choices. The purpose of this...
متن کاملSpectroscopic evidence for NAT, STS, and ice in MIPAS infrared limb emission measurements of polar stratospheric clouds
We have analyzed mid-infrared limb-emission measurements of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) by the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) during the Antarctic winter 2003 with respect to PSC composition. Coincident Lidar observations from McMurdo were used for comparison with PSC types 1a, 1b and 2. Application of new refractive index data of β-NAT have allowed to a...
متن کاملVertical profile of δ18OOO from the middle stratosphere to lower mesosphere from SMILES spectra
Ozone is known to have large oxygen isotopic enrichments of about 10 % in the middle stratosphere; however, there have been no reports of ozone isotopic enrichments above the middle stratosphere. We derived an enrichment δ18OOO in the stratosphere and the lower mesosphere from observations of the Superconducting SubmillimeterWave Limb-Emission Sounder (SMILES) onboard the International Space St...
متن کاملMIPAS measurements of upper tropospheric C 2 H 6 and O 3 during the southern hemispheric biomass burning season in 2003
Under cloud free conditions, the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) provides measurements of spectrally resolved limb radiances down to the upper troposphere. These are used to infer global distributions of mixing ratios of atmospheric constituents in the upper troposphere and the stratosphere. From 21 October to 12 November 2003, MIPAS observed enhanced amounts o...
متن کاملSouthern Hemispheric Biomass Burning as Seen by Mipas: C2h6 and Ozone
The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) provides spectrally resolved limb radiance measurements from the upper troposphere to the mesosphere. Under cloud free conditions, these spectral radiances are used to retrieve global distributions of mixing ratios of atmospheric trace species down to the upper troposphere. From 21 October to 14 November 2003, MIPAS observed ...
